National Institute of Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the latest cutting edge technology which has immense potential for increasing crop, livestock, poultry, fruits and vegetables, fisheries, forestry, fertilizer production and curing of diseases. Considering this, government took necessary measures and established a premier R&D institution on Biotechnology in the country. The institute has already started its operation. The Institute is located in Savar near Dhaka. The institute is a centre of excellence and first national level R&D centre on the subject in the country.

Biotechnology, by using new tools and techniques biological processor has opened up wide opportunities in the development of improved variety of crops, farming system, livestock, fishery, forestry, medicine, pest control etc. In August 1993 NCST decided to set up an Institute of Biotechnology. Accordingly, Ministry of Science and Information & Communication Technology has started a project to establish National Institute of Biotechnology at Savar, Dhaka with a cost of taka 2768.24 lakh. The objectives of the institute are:

  • Applications of Biotechnology, specifically recombinant DNA technology to solve problems of concern to the nation in agriculture, industry, health and environment;

  • Integration of molecular and cellular biology with conventional breeding technologies;

  • Enhancement of collaborative research required to augment work at other institutes;

  • Delivery of products/process involving recombinant DNA from gene to field and compliance with national and international regulatory standards especially those involving release of genetically engineered organisms;

  • Systematic transfer of technology from the proposed institute and abroad to other institutes and industry facilitating commercial development.

In the 1st phase a three-storied building will be constructed. It will host six laboratories namely DNA laboratory, Plant Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, Fish Biotechnology, Fermentation and Bioprocessing, Bioenergy and Fertilization.

It is expected that with the establishment of NIB, R & D work in biotechnology will be developed in the country. It will play a positive role in the socio-economic development of the country through improved products and processes in the different sectors of economy
